4 Things We Thought of During
Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival 2016

While klpac has brought us many exciting shows from the beginning of the year, this is the best collection of all the various art forms in one concentrated arts festival! The Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival (YSDAF 2016) happened on the 20th and the 21st of August in Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) and it was an amazing weekend!

Whether you’re a theatre-goer, a music fan, dance freak, or a fine arts critique, YSDAF had something for everyone. And even if you don’t like art (if so, I don’t know what you are, but it’s not human), there was food! YSDAF saw a very diverse crowd, with people of all walks of life, because it entailed activities for everyone- from the Tango workshop, Paras Bunyi (which was an awesome trippy music + visual experience), indie bands, and gamelan workshops, to puppetry shows, wayang kulit, movie screenings, and many more!

Here are 4 things that crossed our minds at YSDAF 2016!

1. All Art Forms in One Venue!

Yeah, we have a couple of festivals in Malaysia, but most festivals revolve around one or two art forms. There’s a number of music festivals, there are film festivals, there are food festivals… but where in Malaysia can you get them all jumbled into one? YSDAF had theatre, film, music, dance,  food, visual mapping, and lots more!

2. Spoilt for Choice!

The options were definitely there, but maybe there were just TOO many choices (and not enough time). What if you wanted to attend a movie screening and a directing workshop, but both were scheduled in the same hour?  Well yeah, there are two days, but most options were not double occurrences. What if you wanted to learn contemporary dance, get an insight to directing, catch a performance in the lobby, shake your booty with belly dancing, and catch another performance in the box office? I don’t suppose Joe Hasham has a time turner (ala Albus Dumbledore).

3. So much talent!

It has already been established that Malaysians are talented af. But as we said, with so many art disciplines in one place… the amount of talent is crazy. We take two steps, we see an actor in the throes of woe, we take another two, we have musicians rocking out, walk a little bit more, we have visual artists focused on their muse. Its cray!

4. KLPAC is an awesome venue!

When it comes to event grounds, it’s tough to find a perfect location. For the programme that klpac offered at YSDAF, we cannot think of anywhere that is as perfect as klpac. With multiple indoor studios, Pentas 1 and 2, Indicine for Paras Bunyi, outdoor carpark area for the food, and the lakeside lawns for the pop up shops and music stage, it’s just perfect!
