The Glass

The Performing Arts Centre of Penang (penangpac) will be staging Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie from 22 to 24 September. The classic American play is set in the era of the Great Depression and sees Amanda Wingfield, a mother who refuses to let go of her past; Laura Wingfield, her daughter who shelters herself in fantasy; and Tom Wingfield, her son who suffocates under the weight of his obligations to her and Laura. The Wingfield home is a world of it’s own in which the line between truth and illusion becomes blurred.

“The Glass Menagerie is without a doubt one of the most memorable contemporary plays by iconic American playwright Tennessee Williams. 70 years after its first staging, this classic masterpiece’s universal message remains as powerful as ever” said Christopher Preslar, Director.

Taking the role of Amanda Wingfield; the Mother; is none other than Marina Tan, a renowned powerhouse actress known for her stellar performances in Marble Hearts, Don’t Let Shakespeare Know, Shear Madness, and Postcards from Rosa.

The Glass Menagerie marks penangpac’s first project under its Guest Director Programme where up-and-coming and aspiring theatre directors are invited to take the creative helm of a production. “With penangpac being a not-for-profit theatre, we need extensive programming in addition to our Patron of the Arts fundraising initiatives to support our centre’s sustainability” said John S. de Silva, Associate Artistic Director. The programme also provides the platform for young directors to try their hand at directing for the stage. “We are pleased to have Christopher Preslar as the first director under this new programme” added John.)
